Victorian Cafe'
The Website:
The Victorian Cafe has reinvented the idea of breakfast by putting their modern spin on traditional fare and embracing the idea that morning dining should be an experience. Their diverse menu successfully fuses classic breakfast items with creative food combinations and unique flavors, often twisting popular dinner entrees into unforgetable omelets and eggs benedicts. The result is delicious offerings that challenge diners to break free of their breakfast sterotypes. The Victorian Cafe experience is made complete by the full bar, serving up award winning Bloody Marys and the legendary "ManMosa" crafted with Victorian Cafe private label champagne. It's this unrivaled dining experience that has made The Victorian Cafe a favoite among locals and visitors alike, earing them "Best Breakfast in Bend" a record 13 times.
"The Vic" as the locals call it, changes their specials two times each week to keep the menu fresh and new for its loyal patrons. The Victorian is not only the best breakfast in Bend it's one of the best dining experiences you can have of any meal! Owner and Visionary John Nolan has created something very special and would love to share his establishment with you.
The Locals:
One of the biggest compliments a restaurant can have is being voted #1 by its peers. The Victorian is a favorite from the locals that work in the industry, live in the neighborhood, and people all over Central Oregon. I talked to one couple that said they drive from almost an hour away just to have breakfast at The Vic once a month. There is an article hanging up in The Vic that demonstrates the locals respect and love for the restaurant. An independent magazine was interviewing local chefs from various restaurants a few years back. When the interviewer asked "Who has the best breakfast" over half of the answers were "The Victorian Cafe'".
We Say:
The only reservation we had was on the weekends the wait can be over 30 minutes though they do work hard to keep you happy while waiting. From our review process and from talking with locals, the experience is well worth the wait. As for our experience, we can say that The Vic's reputation is well deserved. Based on the criteria of taste, service, food quality, presentation, atmosphere, and overall experience, The Vic was almost unanimously 5 stars which doesn't happen often for us.
Here is what our writers had to say in our official review:
Ask anybody who has been around Bend for a while what their favorite place to eat breakfast is, and chances are their response will be, The Vic. Just in case you haven’t heard, the Vic is the affectionate nickname given to Bend breakfast legend the Victorian Café. A consistent winner in best of lists and competitions all around town for at least a decade, the Vic consistently keeps it fresh and fabulous, and keeps people coming back in droves for traditional favorites, innovative and creative dishes, fantastic beverages and an overall memorable experience.
Who says you have to wait till nighttime to party? Breakfast at the Vic always feels like a celebration, but maybe that’s because I can’t dine there without ordering some sort of amazing cocktail (or two, or three, hey, that stuff I was gonna do can be done tomorrow, right?). My favorites are their ManMosas (for those, like myself, who prefer a pint glass over a champagne flute) and bloody Mary’s (which can be ordered with spicy pepper-infused vodka for an extra kick). One of each makes for a well-rounded Victorian Cafe? Experience. But don’t forget to order some food, too, or you might get yourself into trouble.
It’s hard for me to eat at the Vic without ordering some sort of breakfast dish, as their breakfast entrees never disappoint, but I do want to make it clear that they have fantastic lunch options, as well. Unfortunately for me I haven’t tried many of their lunch dishes as I get ensnared by The Vic’s diverse and highly creative benedict menu, which offers something special for every lover of hollandaise. I wrote previously about my love of the British Benedict, which is a vegetarian delight with roasted red peppers, artichoke hearts, mushrooms and sautéed garlic, but if I’m in the mood for something more carnivorous I will order the simple yet delicious Blackstone Benedict, which has slices of bacon and roma tomato, or the California Benedict, which boasts hormone-free turkey breast, fresh spinach, bacon and avocado. In addition to these tasty versions, the Vic almost always has an even more adventurous benedict on their ever-changing menu of specials. Right now it’s the Rogue Almandine Eggs Benedict, which features fresh pan-seared steelhead with toasted almonds, asparagus and lemon caper hollandaise sauce.
Okay, so I think I know where I’m going to breakfast tomorrow? This leads me to something I really love about the Victorian Cafe?: it’s got a variety of fabulous options for vegetarians and carnivores alike. The last time I ate there, I was definitely feeling like something veggie, so I ordered the very fresh-sounding Sandra Marie Omelet. This unique treat contains a garden’s worth of vegetables including portabella mushrooms, yellow squash, zucchini, spinach, roma tomatoes and garlic, all topped with homemade pesto. My carnivore friend, however, was blissed out with his pulled-pork sandwich, which was on special at the time. We were both happy and satisfied, but then again, I don’t think there’s been a time that I’ve eaten at the Vic and haven’t felt exactly that.
